Green Manifesto Campaign 2007

ECOLO Japan evaluated all candidates for the national election 2007
in terms of environmental achievements

July. 27, 2007

”Who is a real candidate that has been involved in ecology ?”
”Who is to be the most environmental-friendly candidate at all ? ”

In order to show the correct answer to voters, ECOLO Japan, a nationwide Green policy network for sustainable society did ”Green Manifesto Campaign 2007” for the latest
national election of Japan.

ECOLO Japan tried to evaluate all candidates for the national election for the Upper House (Senate) in Japan, held in July 2007, in terms of their enviornmental achievements.
This campaign was very successful and was reported by leading Press and big mass media
as well: Sankei Press, Sankei Express, Asahi Press, Nikkei Press, Kyoto Press, Enviroasia etc.

There they analysed candidates' previous achievements, activities in terms of environmental field. Then they selected environmental policies in their election pledges, evaluating all in total with additional points, finally grading them (like AAA, AA, A) to announce officially on their website, classifying by their belonging party.

"The results were not expectable, because there proved to be a huge score gap between the top 30-40 candidates and the others" so said Mr. Shuji Imamoto, the chairperson of ECOLO Japan.

"This shows how few politicians are really interested in environmental issues in Japan,. although climate crisis is now advancing very rapidly and seriously."
"It was a pity that not many candidates had taken up environmental issues as their election pledges --- mostly their interest is devoted to social security issues --- pension, employment, child care, less salaly and highly taxiation etc."
"Most candidates' election pledges were only abstract slogans, which had no concrete ideas, methods nor process." Mr. Imamoto said ironically.

ECOLO Japan attempted to show voters who should be most environmental friendly candidates and who should be worth being voted, particularly for ecologists and environmental acitivists.
